Generally, one pound of body fat is equal to around 3500 calories which means that losing fat requires what is known as a calories deficit. Now losing this fat is a slow process and requires time as well as a lot of hard work. However, breaking down muscle is equal to around 6000 calories and is a very fast process. With this said, using muscle for energy is counterproductive because people want to gain muscle not lose it!

So why is gaining muscle in the first place so hard?

In order to synthesise one pound of muscle the body require a calorific surplus of 2700 calories and looking at this in terms of natural production, building one pound per month is quite a task. The reason the process is so hard is because many people do not factor their diet into the big picture and what we eat is perhaps the most vital aspect of the entire equation.

Over one month the average person requires an extra 90 calories per day in order to build that one pound of muscle, however many people are eating way beyond that without doing the activity required so they end up putting on fat instead muscle. If you are eating a surplus you must ensure that you consume the necessary protein to repair the damage created during weight lifting sessions so that muscle mass can be created.
