Everyone wants to do well when they commit to a work out regime, and so they try to eat well and consume the right foods. Trick is, if you’re doing these fitness regimes alone it can be difficult to know what to do for the best, or even to know where to start. You may think that working out on an empty stomach is okay, or that you must eat loads of fruit and veg before you hit the gym in order to get the optimum output and results from all your hard work and sweating. That’s not strictly true however. Here at Fitness Training Solutions we’ve got some tips for you to make sure you consume the best foods to get the best results from your work out whilst keeping your body safe and fuelled properly.

Before your workout, while it’s important to keep hydrated, you must not gulp big mouthfuls of water or you could make yourself sick. All that fluid swimming round in your stomach while you’re jumping around is not going to feel great, trust us. Two cups around two hours before you hit the gym is great, then small sips as you work out. Good quality carbs too are a must if you want to eat right before a work out.  Whole wheat toast, banana, fruit, peanut or almond butter and smoothies are all great examples of pre-gym food. Breads, cereals, things like these give you a great boost. Apple wedges and peanut butter are a super sweet but healthy snack for you to pep you up before you start to exercise. Also, a grilled chicken sandwich is a fantastic choice if you are more than a bit peckish. Just don’t load up on mayo or super thick white bread.

After your work out you need protein. This could be a boiled egg or a smoothie if you’re on the go, or if you’re able to sit down and eat something at the table, an omelette with veggies and salad is a great choice. Another would be a whole wheat tuna and hummus sandwich with spinach. A nice glass of water to wash it all down with too is a good idea, to replace any lost fluids. A smoothie with low fat yoghurt and fruit with some added protein powder is another idea.
